Ancient Indian astrology teaches that destiny is shaped by three fundamental factors: Place (देश), Person (पात्र), and Period or Time (काल). Together, they form the Triangle of Destiny, where a significant change in any one of these three can alter the course of your life.
A skilled astrologer studies not only a birth chart but also changes in these three factors to understand the direction of a person's destiny. The key idea is simple: whenever your Time, Place, or People change, your destiny is likely to change as well.
NOW READ IN DETAIL...
Place • Person • Period (देश • पात्र • काल)
Every person wants to know when fortune will smile upon them. We visit astrologers hoping to hear about better days ahead rather than impending difficulties.
In my understanding of Indian astrology, destiny is primarily influenced by three interconnected factors:
- Place (देश)
- Person (पात्र)
- Period or Time (काल)
These three form what I call the Triangle of Destiny.
Each side of this triangle contributes to the unfolding of our destiny. A change in any one of these three factors can bring about a significant change in our lives.1. Place (देश) ( Geography / Environment / Climate )
Place is the easiest component of destiny to change.
Changing one's location can dramatically alter opportunities, relationships, wealth and even health.
However, "place" operates at many different levels, rather like the layers of an onion.
For example:
- Your room
- Your house
- Your neighbourhood
- Your city
- Your state
- Your country
Each level contributes differently to your destiny.
Moving from one city to another may produce a greater change than simply moving to another house within the same city.
History is full of examples where migration completely transformed a person's fortune.
2. Person (पात्र)
The second factor is the people and organizations with whom we become associated.
This includes:
- family
- spouse
- friends
- employer
- business partners
- customers
- institutions
- organisations
Unlike place, this factor is much harder to change.
Human relationships also exist in layers.
Your own personality has the greatest influence.
Next come your immediate family, followed by relatives, close friends, colleagues, clients and finally casual acquaintances.
Just as iron becomes magnetized when placed near a magnet, human beings are influenced by those with whom they associate.
Good company often improves destiny, while unhealthy associations can gradually weaken it.
However, even fortunate people do not remain fortunate forever.
For example, association with Vijay Mallya or Kingfisher Airlines before 2012 was considered prestigious. After 2016, the same association became a liability.
Thus, the influence of people itself changes with time.
3. Period (काल)
Time forms the foundation of the Triangle of Destiny.
Unlike Place and Person, Time is completely beyond human control.
Everything else ultimately unfolds within Time.
When Aadi Shankaracharya says " मा कुरु धन जन यौवन गर्वं ,हरति निमेषात्कालः सर्वम्" ( Don't pride your possessions of wealth ,popular support and Youth as Time can snatch everything in a moment ) , he is emphasising this aspect of time only .
Indian astrology considers Time to be expressed through the cyclical motion of celestial bodies. Because planetary motion is cyclical, history itself often appears cyclical.
Time is basically product of planetary motion and they move in cyclical manner , so Time's tendency is circular or cyclical in nature . That is why our clocks are also in circle .

We observe repeated cycles of:
- prosperity and recession
- war and peace
- construction and destruction
- rise and fall of civilizations
- birth and death
This is why clocks are circular rather than linear.
Time never truly begins or ends—it moves in repeating cycles.
Why Time Is the Strongest Factor
Among the three factors:
- Place is visible and static.
- Person is living and dynamic.
- Time is invisible and therefore the most powerful.
Invisible forces generally exert greater influence than visible ones.
No one can stop the passage of Time.
The only practical approach is to understand its direction and adjust our actions accordingly.
That is precisely where astrology attempts to help.
Natural Changes in Fortune
Even without changing your place or companions, destiny changes simply because Time changes.
Examples are everywhere.
A poor farmer near Gurgaon became a millionaire when government acquisition dramatically increased the value of his land.
Conversely, prosperous farmers near the Kosi River in Bihar lost everything overnight when devastating floods destroyed their homes and fields.
Neither event occurred because the individuals changed.
Only Time changed.
That is why , even if you keep sitting at one place , doing nothing , you will still get ageing effect and environment around you will change and then your fortune will also undergo a change .
For example , a sheep rearing poor , illiterate farmer of Gurgaon ( India) can become a millionaire over night at age of 60 , because of land acquisition of his barren land by govt. for construction of an express highway .
In a reverse incidence , the millionaire farmers living in vicinity of Kosi river banks ( in Bihar, India ) and having highly fertile land became beggar overnight, when the unprecedented flood swept away their house and fields with breach of river banks. Earthquakes can create similar scenes anywhere any time .
In short , Time's effects are beyond our control and we have to accept and adjust with their role in destiny .
Change Through Association
Our destiny also changes through the people we meet.
Marriage, business partnerships, employment and friendships all introduce new influences into our lives.
Good times naturally bring supportive people.
During difficult periods, relationships often become strained and unfortunate associations become more common.
This observation is reflected in the saying:
"Misfortunes never come alone."
Astrology attempts to identify such periods before they unfold.
Change Through Place
Among the three factors, Place is the easiest to modify.
Many people experience a dramatic improvement in life simply by relocating.
Examples include:
- moving abroad
- job transfers
- higher education
- business relocation
- migration in search of employment
Sometimes a distant place becomes the key to prosperity.
At other times, leaving one's native place proves harmful.
Even successful companies may flourish in one country, yet fail in another.
Time Ultimately Governs the Other Two
Although Place and Person influence destiny, both are ultimately governed by Time.
When favourable periods begin:
- better opportunities appear,
- helpful people enter our lives,
- and beneficial places become accessible.
When difficult periods arrive, even familiar people and familiar places may begin creating obstacles.
Thus, Time quietly orchestrates changes in the other two sides of the triangle.
A Note on Vaastu
Many people believe that modifying a house according to Vaastu alone can transform destiny.
My observation is somewhat different.
People usually move into better houses because their fortune has already improved.
Similarly, when fortune declines, they often leave those very houses.
The change in destiny precedes the change in residence—not necessarily the other way around.
The reality is that you move to better houses when your luck is running strong and you leave same house when your luck diminishes .
When you are elected President , you move to Presidential Palace and when your tenure ends , you have to get out of that .
Will the Change Be Good or Bad?
Every change in Place, Person or Period alters destiny.
Whether the outcome is favourable depends largely on the circumstances accompanying the change.
If a new job, relationship or place brings peace, confidence, good health and inner happiness, it is usually a positive indication.
If it produces anxiety, conflict, poor health or loss of peace, it may be signalling an unfavourable direction—even if it appears materially attractive.
These early signals are often more valuable than external appearances.
Time , place and person change necessarily bring good or bad turn in destiny . A keen observation of the change can give you hint about its direction . Mostly , it is decided by the situations in which the change occurred .
On meeting a new person , how you felt , whether it gave you happiness or problem and that may tell about future prospects from that new person . Same applies to place change . Though , these results may not be permanent and even such relationship undergoes change over a time .
For example , if you have got a job or admission in a college without much competition or obstacles , then it is mostly good for you and your stay there should be trouble free . And if you got it after much efforts and attempts , then you will not have great satisfaction on attaining it .
Basically , it is Time's factor which again dictates the place and person change. When good Time is arriving , you will start meeting good or lucky persons and you reach such places also . And when your bad time starts happening , same place and people will start creating problems for you and that may be signal to change them .
Whether destiny will take a good or bad turn upon change in place / person can also be assessed by body feelings . If meeting a new person by way of marriage , job , new birth , friendship , makes you feel happy and it increases your safety , security , inner peace , health etc then it is good turn of destiny.
But if you feel otherwise and lose peace , sleep , health then it is a bad turn of destiny in long run , even if it may look attractive by way of good city , good company or designation or pay packet .
While assessing astrological charts , study of such changes is very important for a good astrologer in giving accurate prediction and overlooking these real time events can make your theoretical prediction completely wrong .
Many times , symptoms or changes are so strong , that astrologer can confidently predict an event even without birth chart !
